1970s Music History in Lamby's Words

What Happened in the 1970s?

Dad was born in 1971 and he says that, just like most decades, the 1960s weren't over when the new decade started. Apparently, the 1960s crazy train kept coming until 1974. Lots of women got mad because they had had it up to here, which is a high place to have things go up to (and obviously a cranky one). The 1970s had problems, but movies got exciting enough to help people forget about the gas shortage, bellbottoms, Jimmy Carter and disco, which this Lamb likes just fine, thank you very much. Well, the five songs he is allowed to listen to.

Music had sweeter, soft sounds when Bread, Firefall and the Little River Band mellowed everybody. Funky music and soul music came thanks to Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and the Jacksons. Bee Gees, ABBA and Donna Summer gave rock musicians hard-edges. Hip hop was born when a Sugarhill Gang rapped about chicken that tasted like wood at a friend's house. Kenny Rogers jumped in the ocean to rescue Lionel Richie from the Commodores. The 1970s had music for everyone until about 1977 when Elvis left the building and went up to the Mother Ship.
