1980s Music History in Lamby's Words
What Happened in the 1980s?
The Eighties killed the radio star with MTV. Hello, Ronald Reagan and Cyndi Lauper. Goodbye Berlin Wall and roller skating parties. According to Wikipedia, "The time period saw social, economic and general change as wealth and production migrated to newly industrializing economies." Okay, that was a mouthful and this Lamb will NOT do it again.
Dad says that the 1980s were weird years. Neon clothes, leg warmers, parachute pants, girls wearing underwear on the OUTSIDE, Smurfs, Snorks, Ewoks, Dungeons and Dragons, Cabbage Patch Kids...it all sounds like nightmares to this Lamb. The 1980s was a stressful, sad, weird, fun time. John Lennon died. Bob Marley died. And disco died thanks to keyboards and MTV. Michael Jackson, who was little in the 1970s, got as big as the Beatles. Music became a really big business in the 1980s, which is why a lot of people started to listen to music from the 1960s and 1970s. Music in the 1980s sounded like the people lived in recording studios. Teen pop, rock, soul could not stop the power of the hair bands, who made radio miserable and happy at the same time. College Rock went nationwide thanks to R.E.M., but nobody could touch the man in the red leather jacket and sparkle glove doing the Moonwalk dance in his mirror. People were ready for the 1990s.
